Wheel of Time Reread: The Eye of the World Part 3.

The Eye of the World: chapters 21 - 30.

Chapter 21: Listen to the Wind
  • I really like this chapter. I like Moiraine just having enough with Nynaeve and telling her exactly how it is--you are just like me, but you're going to end up way more powerful!
  • Nynaeve tracks Lan again! I also like how despite Lan not having much to say Jordan keeps reminding us that he's there. I love Lan/Nynaeve but every time I read this book I keep thinking this time--this time I'll see this relationship develop, but this chapter is about as close as we get.
    • "When Nynaeve was close, though, Lan put out an arm to bar her way. She tried to brush the obstruction aside, and was surprised when the Warder's arm moved no more than an oak branch would have. She was not frail, but his muscles were like iron."
    • "Lan was looking down at Nynaeve in a way she did not like; surprised and speculative, it seemed to her, though nothing had changed about his face but his eyes."
  • Moiraine senses Nynaeve so we know that she can channel.
    • Nynaeve, Moiraine, and Siuan are my favorite Aes Sedai.
  • Nynaeve's purpose.
    • "Sooner or later she would find Egwene and the boys. Or find a way to make the Aes Sedai answer for whatever had happened to them. One or the other, she vowed."
    • "The Aes Sedai was so confident in her power and her plans, she thought, but if they did not find Egwene and the boys, all of them, alive and unharmed, not all of her power would protect her. Not all her Power. I can use it, woman! You told me so yourself. I can use it against you!"-Nynaeve
  • Firsts:
    • The Ways and Traveling
      • "The Ways are closed, and there has not been an Aes Sedai powerful enough to Travel since the Time of Madness."
    • The Forsaken
      • "I don't think all the Forsaken together could move a thousand Trollocs."
        • HAHAHA! I think they can.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Dresses were not made for stalking."
Chapter 22: A Path Chosen
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Hope is like a piece of string when you're drowning; it just isn't enough to get you out by itself."
    • "If he was the leader, it was time to start leading."-Perrin.
Chapter 23: Wolfbrother
  • Firsts:
    • Elyas Machera:
      • "At least he was not a Trolloc, but he was the strangest fellow Perrin had ever seen. For one thing, his clothes all seemed to be made from animal skins, with the fur still on, even his boots and the odd, flat-topped round cap on his head. His cloak was a crazy quilt of rabbit and squirrel; his trousers appeared to be made from the long-haired hide of a brown and white goat. Gathered at the back of his neck with a cord, his graying brown hair hung to his waist. A thick beard fanned across half his chest. A long knife hung at his belt, almost a sword, and a bow and quiver stood propped against a limb to hand."
      • "The man's eyes were yellow, like bright, polished gold. Some memory tickled at the back of Perrin's mind, then fled."
    • Wolves!
      • "Wolves don't tame, girl, not even as well as men. They're my friends. We keep each other company, hunt together, converse, after a fashion. Just like any friends."
      • "Every wolf remembers the history of all wolves, or at least the shape of it."
      • "Wolves hate Trollocs and Halfmen worse than wildfire, worse than anything, and so do I."
      • "Perrin sat wrapped in his own silence. He could feel Burn leaving. And the scarred male was not the only one; a dozen others, all young males, loped after him. He wanted to believe it was all Elyas playing on his imagination, but he could not. Just before the departing walves faded from his mind, he felt  a thought he knew came from Burn, as sharp and clear as if it were his own thought. Hatred. Hatred and the taste of blood."
    • Seals:
      • "This is an old thing, boy. Older than Aes Sedai. Older than anybody using the One Power. Old as humankind. Old as wolves. They don't like that either, Aes Sedai. Old things coming again. I'm not the only one. There are other things, other folk. Makes Aes Sedai nervous, makes them mutter about ancient barriers weakening. Things are breaking apart, they say."
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Leaders in stories never had to put up with this sort of thing."
    • "That pretty girl. Pushes you around like a batam rooster, doesn't she?"-Elyas
    • "They were staring at him, those four wolves, Perrin saw. He had the feeling that all the wolves, those in the trees, as well, were staring at him. It made his skin itch."
    • "I hope you're not Darkfriends. I don't like killing people after I've fed them. Just remember, they'll know if you lie."-Elyas
Chapter 24: Flight Down the Arinelle
  • Thom knows how to play the Game of Thrones and we begin to see that in the way he expertly deals with an almost mutinous crew.
  • Mat begins to get really annoying! His paranoia is--I don't even like reading about him until after he's released from the dagger. After that he's just awesome!
  • Firsts:
    • Mirrors:
      • Yep, they really aren't good things. There's the whole Mirror Rands in The Shadow Rising that freaks me out too.
      • A mirror is mentioned in his dreams a few times in theis book until the end when he can clearly see himself in the mirror and Ba'alzaman knows who he is.
    • The Choedan Kal statue on Tremalking
    • The Coramoor
    • The Tower of Ghenjei
      • "A tower of metal. I have seen it close up, and I know. River traders use it as a marker. We be ten days from Whitebridge at the rate we go."-Domon
      • "Shining steel, by the look and feel of it, but no a spot of rust. Two hundred feet high, it be, as big around as a house, with no a mark on it and never an opening to be found."-Domon.
    • "a crystal lattice covering an island, and it hims when the moon is up"
Chapter 25: The Traveling People

  • Firsts:
    • Wolves protect Perrin's dreams.
      • "In the distant night the wolves howled the first thin sliver of the new moon toward the horizon, and he shivered. Tomorrow would be time enough to worry about the wolves again. He was wrong. They were waiting to greet him in his dreams."
    • The Song. I don't think we've heard about the Tinker's and their song yet.
      • "They don't even know what the song is; they claim they'll know it when they find it. They don't know how it's suppose to being paradise, either, but they've been looking near to three thousand years, ever since the Breaking. I expect they'll be looking until the Wheel stops turning."-Elyas
    • Raen, Ila and Aram.
    • The Way of the Leaf.
      • "The leaf lives its appointed time, and does not struggle against the wind that carries it away. The leaf does no harm, and finally falls to nourish new leaves. So it should be with all men. And women."
    • The Waste:
      • "Some people can enter the Waste without bring bothered...Gleemen. Peddlers, if they're honest. The Tuatha'an cross the Waste all the time. Merchants from Cairhien used to, before the Tree, and the Aiel War."
    • Far Dareis Mai, the Maidens of the Spear.
    • The first of the Warnings:
      • "Leafblighter means to blind the Eye of the World, Lost One. He means to slay the Great Serpent. Warn the People, Lost One. Sightburner comes. Tell them to stand ready for He Who Comes With the Dawn. Tell them..."-From the Aiel.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "I bet you get to run away a lot."-Perrin
Chapter 26: Whitebridge

  • Thom dies!
    • Well...I really thought he died the first time reading it and I think I might have cried! The boys do have other adults with them but Thom was the only one I thought they could truly trust. So freaking sad!
    • The flash of "an eye-searing blue"
      • From what I gather the blue flash was what happens when Power-wrought blades--Thom's knives--and Thakandar-wrought blades meet.
    • Thom's death kind of reminds me of when Gandalf fight the Balrog and dies in LOTR.
  • Firsts:
    • The Hunt of the Horn! They are calling for hunters to find the Horn of Valere.
      • "In the last, lorn fight 'gainst the fall of long night, the mountains stand guard, and the dead shall be ward, for the grave is no bar to my call."
    • Owyn, Thom's nephew who could wield the power. I'm not sure if I understood exactly what happened to Owyn the first time I read this or if it was later that it really sunk in. Owyn could use the One Power so he was captured and gentled and then died.
    • The Queen's Blessing, an Inn in Caemlyn.
Chapter 27: Shelter From the Storm
  • "Relax, lad. Take life as it comes. Run when you have to, fight when you must, rest when you can."-Elyas. No one ever really seems to have time to just...relax.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Advice! Nobody tells us how to be men. We just are." " proably why you make such a bad job of it."-Perrin and Egwene
Chapter 28: Footprints in Air
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Part of the training you will receive in Tar Valon, Wisdom, will teach you to control your temper. You can do nothing with the One Power when emotion rules your mind."-Moiraine
      • Not entirely true since the only time Nynaeve can use the one power is when she is angry!
    • "The Warder's hard-planed face was expressionless, but there were those cold blue eyes. So cold."
    • "I will keep hope until I know it is gone. I refuse to believe the Dark One can win so easily. I will find all three of them alive and well. I must believe it."-Moiraine
Chapter 29: Eyes Without Pity
  • Ravens. It's hard to hide from and or fight birds.
    • At least Trollocs are suppose to be scary.
  • Artur Hawkwing.
    • I always assumed he was a King Arthur figure, but I read somewhere that he was more like Alexander the Great and to me that makes more sense.
    • Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem Ozymandias.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Fear will kill you if you don't control it"-Elyas
Chapter 30: Children of Shadow
  • Or the chapter where Perrin is a bad ass.
  • Hopper dies! Oh my heart hurts every time I read this!
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "You'll use it, boy, and as long as you hate using it, you will use it more wisely than most men would. Wait. If ever you don't have it any longer, then will be the time to throw it as far as you can and run the other way."-Elyas
