Wheel of Time Reread Part 2

The Eye of the World: Chapters 11 - 20

Chapter 11: The Road to Taren Ferry
  • Rand uses the One Power for the first time!
    • "Run! His skin prickled, and his bones felt as if they were freezing, ready to split open. The Light help her, run! And Bela ran."
    • It's hinted at when Moiraine tells us that of all the horses Bela, the cart horse, is the least tired of them all.
Chapter 12: Across the Taren
  • Moiraine teaches Egwene about the One Power.
  • "[Rand] had never really understood what the Ajahs did. According to the stories they were societies among the Aes Sedai that seemed to plot and squabble among themselves more than anything else..."
    • Seriously it takes up books!
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "There must be a difference in what you saw, it seemed to him, depending on whether you sought adventure or had it forced on you."
    • "When what they do is hidden, men sometimes deal with strangers in ways they wouldn't if there were other eyes to see. And the quickest to harm a stranger are the soonest to think a stranger will harm them."-Lan
    • "Darkfriends! As if Fades and Trollocs and Draghkar were not enough to worry about. At least you could tell a Trolloc at sight."
    • "You all want explanations, but if I explained my every action to you I would have no time for anything else."-Moiraine
Chapter 13: Choices
  • Egwene still thinks this is an adventure and is annoying!
    • Most of my comments about her will probably include the word annoying!
  • Lan trains Rand and Perrin in how to use their weapons.
    • Which is a good thing because they are now carrying a sword and a huge ax!
    • "Hold the sword as I showed you, sheepherder. I cannot make a mudfooted villager into a blademaster in an hour, but perhaps I can keep you from slicing off your own foot."
  • Thom teaches the boys gleeman's tricks.
  • Egwene unbraids her hair.
  • Mat doesn't want to go to Tar Valon!--Too bad!
  • There is another woman in Emond's Field who can channel.
    • Moiraine says that there is ANOTHER woman, but it turns out that there is in fact a crap load!
  • First time:
    • Mandarb, "Blade" in the Old Tongue, is the name of Lan's horse
    • Children of the Light
    • Prophecies of the Dragon
      • The fall of the Stone. The Stone will never fall until the Sword That Cannot Be Touched is wielded by the Dragon.
      • "A prophecy that was easily fulfilled would not be worth much, now would it?"-Thom
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "The Dark One is after you three, one or all, and if I let you go running off wherever you want to go, he will take you. Whatever the Dark One wants, I oppose, so hear this and know it true. Before I let the Dark One have you, I will destroy you myself."
Chapter 14: The Stag and the Lion
  • More dreams.
    • "Did they tell you the Eye of the World would serve you? What glory or power is there for a puppet? The strings that move you have been centuries weaving...The Amyrlin Seat will use you until you are consumed, just as Davian was used, and Yurian Stonebow, and Guaire Amalasan, and Raolin Darksbane. Just as Logain is being used. Used until there is nothing left of you."
      • The White Tower will use him as a puppet, just like all the other false Dragons.
      • False Dragons are listed; Davain, Guaire Amalasan, Yurian Stonebow, Raolin Darksbane and Logain.
    • Ba'alzamon [Elan Morin Tedronai/Ishamael] let's us know that he's the guy from the prologue.
    • Rats
  • Firsts:
    • Min!
      • I always liked her.
    • Logain!
      • The false Dragon in Ghealdan
    • Artur Hawkwing
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "You will serve me, or you will dance on Aes Sedai strings until you die!"-Ba'alzamon
Chapter 15: Strangers and Friends
  • All three boys are having the same dream.
  • Min explains her visions, being able to see "pieces of the Pattern".
    • And not all of them have happened yet.
    • "The sparks are trying to fill the shadow, and the shadow is trying to swallow the sparks."-Min
    • Lan:
      • Seven ruined towers. A babe in a cradle holding a sword
    • Thom:
      • A man juggling fire. The White Tower-which doesn't make any sense for a man.
    • Perrin:
      • A wolf. A broken crown. Trees flowering all around him.
    • Mat:
      • A red eagle. An Eye on a balance scale. A dagger with a ruby. A horn. A laughing face.
    • Rand:
      • A sword that isn't a sword. A golden crown of laurel leaves. A beggar's staff. Rand pouring water on sand. A bloody hand and a white hot iron. Three women standing over a funeral bier with Rand on it. Black rock wet with blood. Lightning.
  • Padan Fain returns
    • I still cannot believe what a Big Bad he ends up being.
  • Mat doesn't trust Moiraine--Aes Sedai.
    • He might not trust her but he does rescue her later.
    • It is interesting that the boy that distrusts Aes Sedai the most
  • The boys turn to Thom for wisdom.
    • No one seems to ever know who to trust and because everyone has so many secrets things get all messed up!
  • Firsts:
    • Bornhald
      • "Children of the Light. White Cloaks. Men who hated Aes Sedai. Men who told people how to live, causing trouble for those who refused to obey. If burned farms and worse could be called as mild as trouble."
    • Dreamworld has consequences in the real world.
      • Rats with broken backs! Things that happen in dreams can affect the real world.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "As for dreams, maybe it's your idea of a dream, but I never thought it was mine."-Min referring to seeing that she would be one of Rand's threesome.
    • "Blood and ashes"-Rand
Chapter 16: The Wisdom
  • Lan flatters Nynaeve for being able to track them and she blushes.
    • I like the fact that Lan first notices Nynaeve because of her mad tracking skills.
    • "There was nowhere for you to go except Baerlon. To be safe, though, I follows your trail. You certainly cut back and forth enough. But Then, I suppose you would not care to risk meeting decent people."
  • Even though Rand and Nynaeve butt heads a lot later on, they really have a do care about each other and have a nice little one on one here.
  • Nynaeve vs. Moiraine
    • "Moiraine and Nynaeve sat at opposite ends of the table, neither taking her eyes from the other."
  • Firsts:
    • The braid.
      • "Nynaeve's briad was thrown over her shoulder, the end gripped in one fist; she kept giving it little tugs the way she did when she was being even more stubborn than usual with Village Council."
    • Outlanders
      • "It is none of any outlander's business."
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Best you remember some secrets are too dangerous for saying aloud, even when you think you know who hears."-Thom
    • "Whether the bear beats the wolf or the wolf beats the bear, the rabbit always loses."-Nynaeve
    • "The Light save me from men who think with the hair on their chests. Though I don't know as there are any other kind."-Nynaeve
Chapter 17: Watchers and Hunters
  • Myrddraal:
    • "A man's face, but pasty white, like a slug under a rock, and eyeless. From oily black hair to puffy cheeks was as smooth as an eggshell."
  • These teenage boys sure like to dance.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Remember what--who--it is that he wants. We are in a war, as surely as anyone in Ghealdan, though thousands fight there and only eight of us here."-Moiraine
Chapter 18: The Caemlyn Road
  • Battle Cries:
    • "For the Seven Towers!"-Lan
    • "Manetheren!"-Rand and Perrin
    • "Carai an Caldazar! Carai an Ellisande! Al Ellisande!"-Mat
  • Nynaeve vs. Moiraine--Their squabbling gets a little annoying. Both are use to being the person people go to for help, and having to Alpha Females isn't the easiest thing for any group. Especially when Moiraine's Warder starts having feelings for the new girl!
  • Firsts:
    • The Seven Towers.
      • "The Light go with you, last Lord of the Seven Towers"-Moiraine
    • Mat speaks the Old Tongue.
      • "Carai an Caldazar. Al Ellisande. For the honor of the Red Eagle. For the honor of the Rose of the Sun. The ancient warcry of Manetheren, and the warcry of its last king...The blood of Arad's line is still strong in the Two Rivers. The old blood still sings."-Moiraine
    • Aridhol or Shadar Logoth.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "Thom was chewing the ends of his mustaches, and he had a speculative frown on his face. The gleeman seemed to know a great many things."
      • First, if you can chew the ends of your bigote then it's to long and you need to shave!
      • Second, we're beginning to see that Thom isn't just a regular gleeman. He knows who the Lord of the Seven Towers is and in a Thom fashion is putting pieces together and planning.
    • "He was not seen...I have followed his trail remember."-Nynaeve.
      • Oh, Nynaeve and Lan!
    • "Mat was the only one who had been unhorsed. Rand trotted toward him, but Mat tossed a noose away from him with a shudder, gathered his bow, and scrambled into his saddle unaided, though rubbing his throat."
      • HA! Definite foreshadowing of his future hanging!
    • "So that's what a battle is like.'-Rand
      • Oh poor Rand, that wasn't a battle; it was more of a skirmish then a battle. Just wait, you're going to see plenty of battles.
Chapter 19: Shadow's Waiting
  • Mat doesn't like the idea that a dead man is speaking with his mouth.
    • "You heard what Moiraine said. It's as if some dead man was speaking with my mouth. I on't like it."-Mat
      • Dead men speaking with your mouth--get use to it Mat! At least you don't have a dead man's voice in your head like Rand.
    • "Maybe you're Aemon come back again. The way you go on about how dull Emond's Field is, I'd think you would like that--being a king and a hero reborn."-Perrin
      • HA! Mat does become a king! He hates when people call him a Lord! And with all those dead memories his is pretty much a hero reborn--then there is Brigitte!
  • Just let the treasure be! Never go after the treasure.
    • "You can sleep anytime...Look at where you are. A ruined city. Treasure."-Mat
  • Shadar Logoth:
    • "Before Mordeth had been long in the city he had Balwen's ear, and soon he was second only to the King. Mordeth whispered poison in Balwen's ear, and Aridhol began to change. Aridhol drew in on itself, hardened. It was said that some would rather see Trollocs come than the men of Aridhol. The victory of the Light is all. That was the battlecry Mordeth gave them, and the men of Aridhol shouted it while their deeds abandoned the Light."-Moiraine
      • Sounds a lot like Wormtongue in LOTR.
    • "No enemy had come to Aridhol but Aridhol. Suspicion and hate had given birth to something that fed on that which created it, something locked in the bedrock on which the city stood. Mashadar waits still, hungering. Men spoke of Aridhol no more. They named it Shadar Logath, the Place Where the Shadow Waits, or more simply, Shadow's Waiting."-Moiraine
  • Trollocs:
    • "Trollocs and Myrddraal loathe deep water. Trollocs are terrified of it. Neither can swim. A Halfman will not wade anything more than waist deep, especially if it's moving. Trollocs won't do even that if they can find any way to avoid it."-Lan
  • Firsts:
    • Mordeth, the man with no shadow and  Mashadar.
      • "A sleek, somewhat overfed man, with drooping eyelids that made him seem to be hiding behind something and staring. Short, and completely bald, he walked as if her were taller than any of them. His clothes were certainly like nothing Rand had ever seen before, either. Tight black breeches and soft red boots with the tops turned down at his ankles. A long, red vest thickly embroidered in gold, and a snowy white shirt with wide sleeves, the points of his cuffs hanging almost to his knees."
      • "Mordeth alone was not consumed by Mashadar, but he was snared by it, and he too, has waited within these walls through the long centuries. Others have seen him. Some he has influenced though gifts that twist the mind and taint the spirit, the taint waxing and waning until it rules...or kills. If ever he convinces someone to accompany him to the walls, the boundary of Mashadar's power, he will be able to consume the soul of that person. Mordeth will leave, wearing the body of the one he worse than killed, to wreak his evil on the world again."-Moiraine
        • Padan Fain!
    • The ruby dagger.
      • "He didn't give us anything, and he didn't touch us."-Mat
        • Mat's fail safe begins--He didn't give it to me, I took it!
    • Warder Bonds:
      • "He was pledged to fight the Dark One before he left the cradle, a sword placed in his infant hands. Besides, I would know the minute of his death and the way of it, just as he would know mine. Rest, Nynaeve. All will be well."-Moiraine
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "I may not like her, it is true...but I help anyone who needs my help, whether I like them or not...The fact is, she needs my herbs, and so do you...The fact is, she can only do so much, even with her One Power, and she has done about as much as she can without collapsing. The fact is, your sward cannot help her now, Lord of the Seven Towers, but my herbs can."-Nynaeve
    • "That is dangerous talk, stupid talk. The dead can be reborn, or take a living body, and it is not something to speak of lightly...The old blood, she said. The blood, not a dead man. I've heard that it can happen, sometimes. Heard, though I never really thought...It was your roots, boy. A line running from you to your father to your grandfather, right back to Manetheren, and maybe beyond. Well, not you know your family is old. You ought to let it go at that and be glad. Most people don't know much more than that they had a father."-Thom
      • Lessons learned: Do your genealogy and be happy doing it!
      • We see the Forsaken be reborn in different bodies and boy is it creepy!
    • "Mat's doing...He's always talking some mischief or other, and the others lose the little wits they were born with when they're around him."-Nynaeve
Chapter 20: Dust on the Wind
  • The chapter where everyone splits up.
  • Mashadar
    • "The evil of Shadar Logoth...Mashadar. Unseeing, unthinking, moving through the city as aimlessly as a worm burrows through the earth. If it touches you, you will die."-Moiraine
  • Perrin:
    • "He knew that Mat, and almost everyone else in Emond's Field, considered him slow of thought. It was partly because he was big and usually moved carefully--he had always been afraid he might accidently break something or hurt somebody, since he was so much bigger than then boys he grew up with--but he really did prefer to think things all the way through if he could. Quick thinking, careless thinking had put Mat into hot water one time after another, and Mat's quick thinking usually managed to get Rand, or him, or both, in the cookpot alongside Mat, too."
  • Mat and Rand give their Moiraine coins away.
    • Oops, there goes her direct link to the boys!
  • Rand channels a second time!
    • "I'm going to die! Light help me...I'm going to...! The Trolloc's arm started forward, driving the splintered shaft, and Rand found the breath for one yell. "No!" Suddenly the ship lurched, and the boom swung out of the shadows to catch the Trolloc across the chest with a crunch of breaking bones, sweeping it over the side."
  • Firsts:
    • Thom's knives--well his second best knives.
      • We also get a glimpse of Thom's story telling talent. We knew he was a gleeman, but we begin to see that he is an exceptionally good one! And he thinks very fast on his feet!
    • Bayle Domon, captain of the Spray.
      • "A stocky man in a coat that hung to his knees...Long hair that fell to his thick shoulders and a beard that left his upper lip bare and framed his round face. Round but not soft."
      • I really like Domon! He is always in the wrong place at the right time--at least for all the Two River folk.
    • Someone else, Perrin, narrates 20 chapters later.
  • Favorite Lines:
    • "He believed it because he needed to believe it."
    • "Stars spangled the night sky."
    • Mat feels his throat again!
